Connection Between Skin and Gut

Have you ever heard that there is a connection between the health of your skin and your gut? I don’t know if you’ve heard this, but inflammation or changes in the gut have a direct connection with your skin, and it’s true.

You might not be aware, but when we are being formed in the womb, the skin, central nervous system, and gut share the same embryonic origin. Therefore, they can respond in similar ways.

Some skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and dermatitis can worsen or improve in response to stress and anxiety due to this common embryonic origin.

The Role of Intestinal Flora

The intestinal flora consists of many colonies of bacteria, literally millions or billions, that colonize us directly. Research shows that 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago, our intestinal flora was much better than it is today, unfortunately.

Impact on Skin Conditions

And why am I talking about this? Because many people with facial acne, especially inflammatory acne that doesn’t easily improve, or who have difficult-to-control rosacea, experience constant ups and downs.

Dermatitis, whether seborrheic, contact, or atopic, as well as other inflammatory skin conditions, may be related to intestinal dysbiosis, also known as intestinal microbiota imbalance, which occurs when there is an alteration in the composition and function of the bacteria inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract.

When there is a change in the intestinal flora and bad bacteria predominate, there can be more inflammation, directly affecting the entire organism, especially the skin.

Symptoms of Dysbiosis

Dysbiosis can cause a variety of symptoms, including: Digestive problems: Abdominal pain, gas, bloating, cramps, diarrhea, constipation. Skin problems: Acne, eczema, dermatitis. Mood problems: Anxiety, depression, irritability. Sleep difficulties: Insomnia, sleeplessness. Other symptoms: Headache, fatigue, lack of energy, weight gain.

Causes of Dysbiosis

What causes our intestinal flora to change so much that it affects other things? This dysbiosis can mainly occur for two reasons: the first is the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. Every time you take an antibiotic, it kills various bacteria, including those in your intestinal flora, and it can take time to rebuild. The second main factor leading to dysbiosis, much more frequent, is poor diet.

The bacterial flora of a person with obesity is different from that of a person with normal weight. Gradually, an unbalanced diet changes this flora, generating more inflammation, making the person inflamed overall.

Dietary Recommendations

Reduce the consumption of refined sugar and high-glycemic-index carbohydrates as much as possible. They can be consumed in balance and moderation. If you repeatedly ingest sugar, it is an inflammatory food and leads to dysbiosis, worsening your skin. Additionally, reducing gluten consumption can improve this dysbiosis. Another important thing is to decrease the intake of trans fats in your diet.
